Summary and Response 1

This article,"population growing at a furious rate" written in the USA TODAY on July 18, 1994, by Margaret L. Usdansky concerns the rapid increase of the population in the world, and its consequences for the global environment. The author cites, for example, Vice President Gore, who said that the rapid growth is a problem for the maintenance of the societies; and Henry Kendall, Nobel Prize winner who declared that if men do not do something in order to keep the population stable in a humane way, it will be done by the nature itself. The plan to control the population growth is possible, but faces many problems such as non-application of the plan in some countries and religious problems; so, the author states that the decreasing of the population is something difficult even with covenant among nations.

It is true that the world population growth is the main problem that faces the planet, and it is also important to control it. However, in my view, abortion, which is one of the contraception methods in use, as part of the reproductive health care, is not reasonable, because abortion first is murder, second it is dangerous, and third it leaves with culpability.

Abortion is murder, because when a woman aborts she killed a human being, so, even though it is in the first month, the baby already has three parts: spirit, soul and body. In the Bible, the book of life David declared in Psalm 139 that it was not formed and was not yet being brought to life that God's eyes saw him. God knows each of us and take notes of our acts. When a woman decides to abort she also chooses to kill a person; it is the same as someone who decides to kill an innocent, maybe to get money from this person or because of jealousy.

Abortion is dangerous for women's lives. Even if a woman could find the best physician to abort a baby, it is not certain that after the abortion there will not be some complication which will cause some irreversible damages to her organism that could lead to sterility, especially in the Less Developed Countries where health care is poor and the number of Physician per inhabitants is very low.

When someone decides to abort, it also leaves her with blameworthiness; those women are not happy even after two or three years; they still remembered that one day they did something wrong. The difference is that abortion is allowed, and then they will not be under arrest, but every day in their life there is something like a ghost in their lives. Some people who have gotten married and had good opportunities and families still thought about the first time that they went to abort. Sometimes after getting married some of them cannot have a child because, the abortion was not a success and had caused some damages. Those persons are obliged to adopt a child, because they were not able to conceive a child.

In conclusion, among the contraception methods in use, abortion first is murder, second is dangerous for women's lives, and third leaves women with blameworthiness. It is better to teach women how to avoid pregnancy than advise them to abort.

The person who has had the most influence in my life

A person who has a leadership has influenced every one in this world. Most of the time it is someone very close, such as a grandfather, mother, father, mother, brother, sister, but sometimes it is a person who does not related to your family, for example a Pastor in your community, a neighbor, a professor or a writer. As far as I am concerned, three persons have influenced my whole life since my childhood. They are my mother, which I love and respect her courage, my father who is always on work till he is advanced in age and my elder brother. Believe it or not, the person who has had the most influence in my life is my elder brother Ricardo. My brother and I grew up together and went at the same schools. In spite of there is not a significant difference of age between him and me, he is my model, and so his life has always influenced mine. When we were kids, my brother and I were clothing the same way; people always thought that we were twins. In my view, riding a bicycle it is not something difficult, however I started to learn to ride bicycle when I saw him on a bicycle because I was scared to fall down on bicycle. I remember when we were in high school; he has always warned me about the courses, which required more efforts than other one. In fact, I tried follow his warning because I wanted to do my best and excelled where he failed. It was not an easy work, but most of the time my grade were better than his. Every thing he tried to do or to learn I tried them also. One of the biggest events in my life, when I received Jesus Christ in my life as my savior in October 2, 1994, was as well influenced by his manner to serve God and obey his commands. In order to improve his English when he decided later to go to an Institute, three months later I registered in this institute for the same reason. I remember when I was in my last year in high school and wanted to go to university. At this moment he was freshman at the State University of Haiti, once again he helped me to do the good choice and helped me to prepare the test in order to have the admission. My elder brother cares about me; he always wanted either or not if I find a job, in orders to help me find one. He is like a father for me and he is very proud of me. Despite of he has influenced my life, there some of choices he did that do not fit me, so that the way it is; I have my own personality. On the whole, among the persons surround me like my father, my mother, my elder brother was the person who the life has had the most influence on mine.

Summary Response practice

This article about Global Overpopulation, written by Cara Swann and published on September 1, 2000, is talking about the overpopulation as a big problem and why each new birth increases this problem. She considers some facts as the city where she lives and what the needs of each newborn will be, especially in the U.S. The author also says that she agrees that not having children is a benefit to humankind.

When one considers that the overpopulation is a problem that needs urgent solutions, it is important for people not to be extremist for many reasons, but the main reason is the preservation of nations’ culture, that is related first to their language, the second is the history and the third is their music.

Culture is one of the characteristics of a nation; even though many countries speak the same language, each country adds something to this language that makes it a little bit different from the other countries. Consider Creole, which is the most commonly spoken language in Haiti; people in many countries in the Caribbean such as Saint Lucia, Martinique and Guadeloupe speak Creole, but people in each country speaks Creole differently and adds some words that are sometimes from other languages or traditions. Sometimes, the same world has a different meaning in each country, which is sometimes confusing; it is the same in other languages, for example in Spanish “Guagua” means “Bus” in some Spanish-speaking countries, and in others it means “children”.

It is important for every nation to reproduce and educate their people and let them know who those heroes are and what they did for the nation. Around the world the past history of each country is not the same. Each country in the world is unique and has its history and its heroes. Haiti has some heroes, like Jean Jacques Dessalines, Francois Capois and Tousaint Louverture, who are very honorable and venerable because they sacrificed their life to the freedom of our nation. This is important for the Haitian people to promote these persons and any country is going to remember them, except if they did something related to their country. If a nation does not have newborns how will the history be known by the coming generation?
Even if everyone agrees that music is something universal, people from each country have different feelings when listening to music related to their own country. For example “Salsa” is a kind of music that is very popular in Latin America. Although it is the same “Salsa” being played by musicians in every Latin American country, there is some difference; sometimes people say that it is a little too slow for them, and sometimes a little fast, depending on the country this person is from. People would save their way to appreciate things.

At the end, it is important for people to preserve their culture like language, history and music, but it is also important to preserve the earth for the coming generations.

Ricot's Background

Given that I have a Bachelor in agricultural engineering and that also my thesis of end of studies was related to water quality, where we had to determine the influence of the environment on the drinking-water quality distributed to a population. I believe that I have all necessary qualifications to carry on higher education program and to contribute to the formation of futures executives for my country. Moreover I am a responsible and very motivated person who does not like to draw back from difficulties; once I decide to do something, I do all that is necessary to have it done.
